Privacy Policy

1. Who we are
Lit🔥Land is operated by Literate Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. We are the data controller for the personal information you provide when using our platform.

2. What data we collect
Account information
When you create an account we collect your name, username (handle), email address, and password (hashed — we never store it in plain text). If you sign in via Google or Apple OAuth, we receive your name, email, and profile picture from that provider.
Profile information
You may optionally provide a profile photo, biography, phone number, timezone, and the languages you are studying or teaching.
Booking and lesson data
We store records of your lesson bookings, session dates and times, lesson notes you or your teacher add to a session, and your booking wallet credit balance.
Payment information
Payments are processed by Stripe in Australian Dollars (AUD). We do not store your card number, CVV, or full payment card details — these are held securely by Stripe under PCI-DSS compliance. We store records of purchases, amounts, and Stripe session IDs to manage your booking history and credits.
Lesson recordings and AI summaries
If you have given explicit consent (via your Privacy settings), we may retrieve the transcript of your Zoom lesson recording to generate a personalised post-lesson summary and homework email. The transcript is processed by Anthropic Claude and is not retained by us beyond what is needed to generate the email. The summary email is delivered via Resend. You can withdraw your consent at any time from Settings → Privacy.
Audio transcription
When you use speaking or audio features, your audio may be sent to OpenAI (Whisper) for transcription. Audio is not retained by us or OpenAI after transcription is returned.
Messages
Messages you send through the platform are stored so you and the recipient can read them. We do not read private messages except where required by law or to investigate a reported abuse.
Mobile app
Our companion mobile app (Lit Land) collects the same account information listed above. Additionally, it may process text you enter for translation or AI-assisted language learning. This data is sent to Anthropic Claude and is not retained after the response is returned.
Usage data
We collect standard server logs including IP address, browser type, pages visited, and timestamps to operate and improve the service. We do not use third-party analytics trackers.

- To generate post-lesson AI summaries and homework emails (with your consent)
- To deliver AI-powered language learning features (translation, tutoring, transcription)
- To send transactional emails (booking confirmations, receipts, lesson summaries)
- To send marketing emails where you have opted in
- To detect and prevent fraud and abuse
- To comply with our legal obligations
Our legal basis for processing is contract performance (to provide the service you signed up for), legitimate interests (platform security, fraud prevention), consent (lesson recording summaries, marketing emails), and legal obligation where required.
4. Third-party processors
We share data with the following trusted processors only to the extent necessary to deliver our service:

All processors are contractually bound to protect your data and may only use it for the purposes we specify.
5. Your rights under UK GDPR
As a UK resident (and, where applicable, EU resident under GDPR), you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data
- Erasure — ask us to delete your data ("right to be forgotten"), subject to legal retention obligations
- Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
- Restriction — ask us to limit how we process your data in certain circumstances
- Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests or for direct marketing
- Withdraw consent — where processing is based on consent (e.g. lesson recording summaries), withdraw it at any time from Settings → Privacy without affecting prior processing
To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@lit.land. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
6. Data retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your profile and personal information within 30 days. Payment records are retained for 7 years under UK tax law. Lesson booking records are retained for 2 years for dispute resolution purposes.
7. Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies only where necessary to operate the service:
- Authentication tokens — set by Supabase to keep you logged in
- Session cookies — to maintain your session state
We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking pixels.
8. International transfers
Some of our processors (Anthropic, OpenAI, Vercel, Resend) are based in the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place (such as Standard Contractual Clauses or UK adequacy decisions) in compliance with UK GDPR Chapter V.
9. Children
Our platform is not directed at children under 13. Students aged 13–17 may use the platform with parental or guardian consent. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data without consent, please contact us at hello@lit.land and we will delete it promptly.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or by posting a prominent notice on the platform. Your continued use of Lit🔥Land after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
